Bleached BeeswaxWe have recieved numerous requests from candlemakers for bleached beeswax. Apparently our name turns up quite frequently on internet search engines when you search waxes. We are not proponents of bleached beeswax for encaustic use because although it is less expensive and appears bright white in color it is a much inferior product. Bleached beeswax uses older yellower wax which is whitened through the bleaching process. Bleaching leaves many of the impurities in the wax and also adds unnecessary chemicals to the wax such as phosphoric acid and potassium permangate to decolorize these less expensive waxes without actually removing the colorants. Nevertheless many encaustic artists will overlook this fact and work with bleached wax. Candelmakers are accustomed to working with fumes because many candle recipes call for paraffin in their mixtures. Many oil painters can use this wax in their painting mediums to matte their colors. Since we have a source for very high quality bleached wax we decided to offer it to our customers. Please make sure you have adequate ventilation in your studio if you are painting in encaustic.

Damar Resin...Enkaustikos uses Damar resin to produce a harder more durable paint film. Damar in combination with beeswax produces a paint film with a higher index of refraction. This is why encaustic colors appear so luminous. Enkaustikos uses No. 1 Singapore Damar Resin which is harvested from trees which grow in the East Indies. Damar Resin is a sticky sap that oozes from trees found in the East Indies. As the sap dries and solidifies it captures bugs dried leaves and tree bark. Damar Resin arrives to us in crystal form along with all of these imbedded impurities. This must be filtered out to make a usable product. Damar Resin is a very people and earth friendly ingredient. Damar resin is approved by the FDA for coating fruit and vegetable crates. Many encaustic recipes incorrectly suggest that an artist should use damar varnish. This is not a good idea because damar varnish is made with turpentine. We would like to emphasize that our wax paints are made with damar resin and not damar varnish. We heat filter out the impurities without the use of solvents. We do not recommend working with damar varnish because it contains turpentine which is not only flammable but also gives off unhealthy fumes.
